Bin It Right: small choices make a big difference
Whyalla City Council is reminding residents that what goes into their bin doesn’t simply disappear, as part of a push encouraging the community to “Bin it Right.”
The campaign highlights the real impact of waste disposal habits, reinforcing that the contents of household bins are handled and sorted by real people, and incorrect disposal can pose serious safety risks.
Waste contamination continues to be a challenge across the community, with incorrect items in recycling bins reducing recovery rates and sending otherwise recyclable materials to landfill. Contamination can also damage equipment and create hazards for workers involved in the sorting process.
Whyalla City Council Waste Officer Charuka Sanduni said the message is simple, using the right bin protects workers and improves recycling outcomes, “when people place the wrong items in their bins, it doesn’t just affect the system it can put real people at risk,” Ms Sanduni said.
“Recycling is not an automatic process. Materials are sorted by workers, and contamination like food waste, soft plastics or hazardous items can cause injuries or disrupt operations. Most residents want to do the right thing, and by taking a moment to check which bin to use, they can make a real difference to safety, sustainability and costs across the community.”
The campaign, supported by the Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority (NAWMA), encourages residents to be mindful of what goes into each bin and to follow simple steps at home.
These include:
- Placing the right items in the correct bin
- Keeping recyclables clean and loose (not bagged)
- Using the green organics bin for food and garden waste
- Disposing of hazardous items, such as batteries, at designated drop-off locations
Ms Sanduni said improving waste habits at home plays a key role in reducing contamination and supporting more sustainable outcomes, “every correct decision help reduce landfill, recover valuable materials and create a safer environment for workers. It all comes down to small, everyday choices, if we all do our part, it adds up to a big impact.”
