Airport Runway Upgrade Project
Current status: COMPLETED / UNDER BUDGET
The City of Whyalla would like to thank the State and Federal Governments for making this project possible, providing funding to enable the city’s airport runway to receive a major upgrade.
This investment, totalling $30 million—$16.2 million from the Federal Government and $13.8 million from the State Government—has helped minimize the financial impact on local ratepayers.
Council is also contributing $2.4 million to the project bringing the total cost to $32.4 million.
The upgrade is critical to enable one of the city’s most strategically important assets to cater for larger aircraft. This will ensure it is equipped for the expected growth from major projects, while also presenting a host of opportunities for Whyalla that will have positive flow-on effects for the entire region’s economy.
Required Works
- Runway 17/35 Strengthening by asphalt overlay, minimum 80 mm.
- Taxiway A Strengthening by asphalt overlay, minimum 80 mm.
- RPT Apron Reconstruction of the concrete portion of the apron to Q400 strength requirements.
- Airfield Lighting Replacement of the existing system, including pit and ducting of the primary cables and replacement of the control system.
