The new Changing Places facility includes a range of features not available in standard accessible toilets such as
- a height-adjustable adult-sized change table
- a constant-charging ceiling track hoist system
- a centrally located peninsula toilet
- shower
- circulation spaces as defined in the design specifications
- an automatic door with clear opening
- a privacy screen
- space to accommodate a person using a wheelchair and up to two carers
- air-conditioning
The construction of the new facility has been made available through grant funding from the $1.7 million State Government program aimed at increasing access for people living with disability.
Council is pleased to be able to offer this best-practice facility, that includes customised features that give people with disability a dignified and purpose-built facility to use when they are out and about, thereby increasing their independence.
The foreshore was chosen by the community as the preferred site to construct the facility after extensive community consultation. Now families can visit the popular foreshore with peace of mind knowing that if they are with a person with a disability they now can have access to this state of the art Changing Places facility.
Accessing the facility
Users must provide their own sling to use with the hoist, this is to minimise the risk of accident or contamination.
The facility is secured by a universal key system and members of the community who meet the criteria for access to the facility are urged to order a Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK). A MLAK enables 24/7 universal access to many of the Changing Places amenities across Australia and ensures people with the appropriate eligibility are able to obtain access to facilities without delay.
The MLAK key system will ensure the facility is only accessible to those that meet the eligibility criteria.
Who is eligible
Eligibility is restricted to people who have a disability or have written authority from one of the following:
- a doctor
- a disability organisation
- community health centre
- the owner or management of a building with an accessible toilet on site
If you meet these criteria, please download the order form: MLAK Order Form PDF
The order form can be taken to Richard's Lock N Safe, 6 Forsyth Street to purchase a key.
The integration of the MLAK key system will ensure that the integrity and cleanliness of the space is maintained and vandalism is avoided
