Council supports free meals to the Whyalla community
Whyalla City Council is supporting local individuals and families experiencing financial hardship through a $5,000 community grant to Foodbank SA & NT.
The funding will allow Foodbank’s Whyalla Food Hub and Warehouse to distribute approximately 850 healthy and balanced meal packs free of charge, packs would normally cost $6 each.
Manager City Activation, Gail Rostig, said the initiative will support the health and wellbeing of residents.
“Access to healthy food should not be another source of stress for people already facing financial pressure,” Ms Rostig said.
“This grant will help Foodbank place nutritious meals directly into the hands of Whyalla residents who need them.”
“Council values the essential work of Foodbank and its volunteers, and we are pleased to work alongside them to support our community.”

Justin Hoffmann, Regional Manager (Eyre-Penninsula), Foodbank SA & NT said the funding would help the organisation respond to the growing demand for food relief.
“Council’s contribution means hundreds of Whyalla residents will be able to access a nutritious meal without cost being a barrier,” the representative said.
“Our Whyalla volunteers see firsthand the difference food relief can make. This partnership will help us continue supporting local people with dignity when they need it most.”
More than 53 per cent of households across South Australia are experiencing food insecurity and may not know where their next meal will come from. Each month, Foodbank supports more than 152,000 people across South Australia and the Northern Territory through its food hubs, school programs, charitable partners and agencies.
The Whyalla Food Hub and Warehouse is supported by a team of 25 volunteers and has assisted many local community members during the past 12 months.
