Community Grants and Donations

Council is committed to working in partnership with the community to encourage and support a wide range of recreational, sporting, cultural, heritage and social initiatives that make a positive contribution to the Whyalla community.

Council is pleased to offer two types of funding to achieve this: Donations (for amounts ranging from $100 to $500) Community Grants (for amounts ranging from $501 to $5000)

Donations

Encompasses requests for amounts ranging from $100 to $500

Funding is available for activities/projects/programs that meet at least one of the following two criteria:

  • Increases the skills, knowledge and awareness and/or engages community members in meaningful participation and involvement in community life.
  • Where possible, the activity engages a cross-section of the local community and reflects the cultural diversity of the people of Whyalla.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:-

  • Be resident in the City of Whyalla, or be able to demonstrate that they provide a significant benefit to the Whyalla community.
  • Have limited capacity to raise funds.
  • Hold a current bank account in South Australia in its name (i.e. the name of the organisation or group applying for the grant and the bank account must be the same name).

Applications can be submitted at any time and will be assessed by the Community Services Lead.

Please note:

Whyalla Council along with the Lions Club of Whyalla Mount Laura jointly fund the Whyalla Gift Foundation.

The purpose of the Foundation is to assist persons financially when they are selected to represent Whyalla, South Australia or Australia in their chosen sport or competitive activity.

Therefore please consider whether your request should be submitted via Council’s Donation’s program, or via the Whyalla Gift Foundation. Council reserves the right to re-direct applications.

Community Grants

Encompasses requests for amounts ranging from $501 to $5000

Community Grant Guidelines have been developed to provide assistance to applicants.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to read the guidelines before completing an application.  These guidelines clearly articulate and provide detailed information on the following topics: -

There are six (6) grant rounds per financial year, with applications assessed every two months.

Application forms must be received by the 15th of the relevant (second) month, applications received after 5.00pm on the closing date will not be considered until the next grant round.

The Coordinator Community Services in conjunction with the Executive Management Team will assess applications against the eligibility and selection criteria and make preliminary recommendations.  These recommendations will then be presented to the next Council meeting after the close of each grant round, for discussion and consideration by the Elected Body.

The following criteria are examined when assessing applications:

  • Applicants must demonstrate the capacity to contribute to the project through their own financial or in-kind resources (such as volunteer labour).
  • Funds requested must be proportional to the benefits provided to the community.
  • The project must have a clearly stated purpose and a practical plan for achieving that purpose.
  • The project should be a response to a clearly demonstrated need and be appropriate to that need.
  • The project should encourage and support the involvement of volunteers where appropriate.
  • An organisation will only be eligible for funding once in any one financial year and in no more than two consecutive financial years.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:-

  • Be a not-for profit community group or organisation.
  • Be incorporated or under the auspices of an incorporated body other than Council.
  • Have an established management structure.
  • Be resident in the City of Whyalla, or be able to demonstrate that they provide a significant benefit to the Whyalla community.
  • Have limited capacity to raise funds.
  • Hold a current bank account in South Australia in its name (i.e. the name of the organisation or group applying for the grant and the bank account must be the same name).
  • Have supplied a copy of the applicant’s most recent audited financial statement.
  • Have satisfactorily acquitted all previous grants from Whyalla City Council.
