Council work experience helps local student explore future in Tourism

Local student Tigalillee is gaining valuable hands-on experience at the Whyalla Visitor Information Centre and HMAS Whyalla Maritime Museum through a work experience placement.

During her placement, Tigalillee has assisted with opening and closing procedures, school holiday activities and museum operations, while also observing guided tours aboard the HMAS Whyalla.

Tigalillee said the experience had given her a greater understanding of both the tourism industry and workplace expectations.

"I've learned a lot about the history of the centre and the ship, as well as work ethics and employment," she said.

"I'm genuinely enjoying it and it's helped me decide that tourism is something I'd like to pursue in the future. I'd love to travel, learn about different countries and their histories, and potentially become a tour guide."

She encouraged other students to take advantage of work experience opportunities.

"Don't be nervous and don't overthink it. If you're stuck, just ask because people will help you," she said.

"It's a great experience that teaches you a lot of skills and gives you a better understanding of the workplace."

Visitor Experience Coordinator Ali Sanders said Tigalillee had been a fantastic addition to the team.

"Providing local students with meaningful workplace experiences is an important part of what we do," Ms Sanders said.

"Tigalillee has shown great initiative throughout her placement, and we're proud to support young people as they explore future career pathways here in Whyalla."

Whyalla City Council's People and Culture team said work experience placements provide students with valuable opportunities to build skills, confidence and explore potential career pathways.
