Furniture recovery initiative builds momentum
Whyalla’s Furniture Recovery Initiative has continued to grow, with twice as many items rehomed during August compared with the previous month.
Delivered by Bedford Whyalla alongside Whyalla City Council’s Hard Waste Collection service, the initiative recovered 24 furniture items during August, with 14 successfully rehomed within the community.
This resulted in approximately 1,250 kilograms of furniture being diverted from landfill and an estimated 127.5 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions being avoided.
The initiative also provided 29 hours of employment and training opportunities for Bedford’s employees, while helping 10 local households access affordable second-hand furniture.
The August results represent considerable growth from July, where approximately 955 kilograms of furniture was diverted from landfill.
Bedford Whyalla Operations Manager Barry Chilton said the growing community response demonstrated the initiative’s potential to deliver lasting environmental and social benefits.
“It is encouraging to see the number of items rehomed and households assisted double in just one month,” Mr Chilton said.
“Every suitable item given a second life represents furniture kept out of landfill, an affordable option for a local household and valuable employment and training opportunities for our employees.
“While the initiative is still in its early stages, these results demonstrate its potential, and we look forward to building on this momentum as community awareness continues to grow.”
Community member Fiona Sammut recently picked up a chair and a chest of drawers through the initiative.
“I’m really happy with the chair and chest of drawers I found, they were affordable, in great condition and exactly what I needed,” Ms Sammut said.
“It’s wonderful knowing these items have been given another life instead of going to landfill.”
Residents with furniture in good, reusable condition are encouraged to contact Bedford Whyalla before placing it into hard waste. Bedford can assess whether an item may be suitable to reuse and advise whether collection can be arranged. Bedford Whyalla is not a public drop-off facility, and furniture or other household items must not be left at the Bedford site without prior arrangement.
Residents can contact Bedford Whyalla at embroidery@bedfordgroup.com.au or on (08) 8647 7700 to discuss potentially suitable items. Residents can also follow Bedford’s Facebook page to see newly available furniture.
