With the construction work largely complete, McMahon Services is busily working towards completion, focusing on finalising painting, external cladding, internal fit-out and other finishing work.

Mayor Phill Stone said it was exciting to know this long-awaited project was almost ready to present to the public.

“This heritage-listed facility is such an important part of our Northern Coastline and the history of our city, as well as being a drawcard for tourists,” Mayor Stone said.

“We hope locals and tourists will appreciate the work that’s gone into not only preserving the heritage of the cottages, but also providing modern amenities that will make it a far more enjoyable place to stay.”

Once reopened, the facility will be operated by Kata and Belle, which was announced as the successful tenderer in September last year and aims to cater for a wide variety of customers – including families, tour groups, events and weddings – further enhancing Whyalla’s offering as a tourist destination while continuing to cater for the community.

The cottages have been closed since early 2021, with council working with SA Heritage and Plan SA to ensure that the renovation works stay true to the property plans and meet the heritage requirements.

Some of the key aspects of the project included returning seaward-facing porches to the original verandah configuration; adding bathrooms (including one DDA-compliant); restoring existing flooring, skirting etc; and extending kitchen, dining and living areas.

The project has been made possible thanks to the Government of South Australia’s Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program, as part of council’s Northern Coastline Masterplan.

Council will continue to provide updates on when the facility will be reopened, with the project remaining on track to be completed around the end of the first quarter this year.
