UPDATE: The project is expected to take an extra day now and will finish tomorrow afternoon (Thursday February 12)
Whyalla City Council will undertake a one-day Foreshore Seagrass Relocation Project on Wednesday, 11 February, aimed at improving coastal protection, reducing windblown sand, and improving the beach experience for residents and visitors.
The project involves relocating beach-cast seagrass wrack that has accumulated between the disabled beach access point and the marina breakwater at the Whyalla Foreshore.
The wrack will be harvested using an excavator and dump truck and strategically relocated onto the frontal dunes adjacent to the Caravan Park, progressing back towards the Foreshore and Whyalla Waves Café. Once placed, the seagrass will be shaped into neat piles and compacted.
Works will be carried out by local contractor Whyalla Earthworks. Pedestrians are asked to maintain safe distances from the worksite and operating machinery, with trained spotters onsite to manage pedestrian safety throughout the duration of the works.
