Recently, we had the opportunity to talk with the Young Citizen of the Year award recipient for 2024 Elysia Parker, to discuss the importance of these awards in our community.

The awards recognise individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution during the past year, as well as acknowledging previous achievements and ongoing contribution over and above their normal employment duties.

Elysia was awarded after being recognised for her contributions to the state Student Representative Council (SRC), championing two initiatives: free public transport for students and improved gym accessibility for youth health. As well as leading the Wednesday morning walks along the foreshore to promote a healthy lifestyle and volunteering within Whyalla Secondary College to support the breakfast program and group mentoring for younger students.

Elysia spoke on how it felt to be nominated, stating ''I felt very excited and humbled to be able to win this award. It's a good feeling to know what you're doing is reaching and impacting people.''
