Whyalla's Gratitude Walls Inspire Community Connection: What are you grateful for?

Today I am grateful for…

Have you come across the Gratitude Walls hidden throughout Whyalla? Have you added your message?

From sunshine and the smell of the ocean, to good friends, family, music, bees in the garden, puppies, and even pizza—Whyalla’s Gratitude Walls have captured the simple joys that bring people together.

Installed during the uneARTh Festival, these chalkboard walls appeared in key locations across the city, inviting the community to pause, reflect, and share what they are thankful for.

You can find them at the Tennis Courts in Ada Ryan Gardens and at the Dog Park fence (Hockey car park side).

Whyalla City Council’s Arts & Cultural Facilitator, Teresa Coles, said the response from the community has been both heartfelt and inspiring.

“I watched people admire the walls, reading the messages that made them smile and lifted their spirits,” Ms Coles said.

“Others picked up the chalk to write what they were grateful for that day—and then came back the next day to add something new. The walls quickly filled with messages, creating a shared sense of joy and happiness.”

Gratitude Walls are a simple, yet powerful concept used in communities around the world to foster connection, encourage reflection, and support positive mental health. Whether contributing a personal message or reading the thoughts of others, the experience promotes a sense of belonging and wellbeing.

Research highlights the benefits of practising gratitude, including:

  • Helping people appreciate the important relationships in their lives
  • Shifting focus away from negative thoughts and feelings
  • Supporting positive, lasting impacts on the brain
  • Strengthening community connection and appreciation
  • Enhancing overall mental health and wellbeing

The Gratitude Walls will continue to ‘pop up’ in new locations across Whyalla, offering more opportunities for people to discover them and take part.

This evolving community art project welcomes people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to contribute—one message at a time—helping to build a more connected, positive, and grateful community.

So next time you see a Gratitude Wall, take a moment…what are you grateful for?
