Waste contamination costing the community
Whyalla City Council is calling on residents to take extra care when disposing of their waste, as bin contamination continue to impact the community both environmentally and financially.
While most residents are doing the right thing, incorrect sorting of household waste across the city is creating unnecessary costs that are ultimately borne by the community.
When the wrong items are placed in kerbside bins, it doesn’t simply “sort itself out” real people are required to manually handle and sort through contaminated loads. This process can be unpleasant, unsafe and time-consuming, particularly when hazardous or inappropriate materials are mixed into recycling or green waste bins.
Waste Officer, Charuka Sanduni said “We understand that it can be confusing to remember which item goes in which bin so, to help residents get it right, Council is offering free waste sorting magnets available from the Civic Building, as well as downloadable and printable graphics below to make sorting simple.”
Correctly separating your waste doesn’t just protect the environment, it saves ratepayers money. When bins are contaminated, entire truckloads can be rejected and sent to landfill, significantly increasing disposal costs.

Council reminds residents that if you’re unsure about where an item belongs, help is readily available through Council’s website, educational materials and customer service team.
By taking a moment to sort waste correctly, residents can help protect the environment, reduce costs for the whole community, and help everyone continue to Enjoy Whyalla.
