Take Advantage of Whyalla's Free Hard Waste Pick-Up

15 August 2024

If you’ve got hard waste gathering at your property, did you know you can have it picked up free of charge?

Whyalla City Council offers one free hard waste pick up for each property per year, helping reduce the impact of waste costs for residents while aiming to minimise incidents of illegal dumping.

However, it can’t just be dumped on the footpath waiting to be noticed and picked up – that’s actually illegal, attracting fines up to $1000 – there’s a process to follow to ensure it’s all done correctly.

Council utilises the services of Bedford to manage the booking / pick-up service – simply call them on 8647 7711 to lock in a date, they’ll let you know the requirements, then put the waste out the night before your confirmed date, it’s that easy!

Unfortunately, many residents appear to be unaware of this process, with a 2024 audit of 50 properties with waste on their verge highlighting that only two had booked a hard waste pick-up. The majority of the residents then removed the waste after receiving a notification, with only three needing to be issued a littering expiation notice.

Council’s compliance team regularly conducts inspections and will issue infringements if necessary to ensure Whyalla’s streets stay tidy, but residents can also help.

If you notice waste outside a property for an extended period, we encourage you to contact council to report it via:

Abandoned trolleys have also been prevalent across our city, looking unsightly and causing a hazard to pedestrians (particularly at night).

Council has been working closely with the supermarkets to address this issue, but we can all help make a difference – if you see a trolley left abandoned anywhere in the city, you can report it via the below channels:

Be sure to pass all of this information on to friends / family / neighbours to help ensure everyone is aware of the processes for minimising waste and helping keep our streets tidy.
