Step into Whyalla's creative history this uneARTh Festival
As Whyalla prepares to celebrate creativity throughout March’s uneARTh Festival, residents and visitors are invited to discover the city’s artistic story through Whyalla’s art collection.
The City of Whyalla Art Collection: The Corporate Art Collection Catalogue, the first complete public record of the city’s historic collection spanning works from the late 19th century through to contemporary pieces created in the 2020s.
Written by Tourism Assets Development Officer Paul Mazourek, the catalogue documents 82 artworks from Council’s corporate collection alongside 11 works held within the Whyalla Maritime Museum Collection. The publication traces the evolution of the city through art from early Town Commission acquisitions in 1945 to recent works by contemporary Barngarla artists.
Mr Mazourek said the book aligns perfectly with the spirit of uneARTh, “the festival celebrates artists and this collection shows the artists who helped shape Whyalla itself. It reflects the identity of the city across generations, industry, community, landscape and culture and allows people to experience that story in one place.”
The publication provides a lasting and accessible way for the public to engage with the artworks and their historical significance. During the uneARTh Festival in March, visitors can browse and purchase the catalogue at the Whyalla Visitor Information Centre or Visitor Information Centre Pod for $16.50.
