Soccer community rallies behind Mental Health Matters Round

Whyalla’s soccer community came together at Magill Park on Saturday for a successful Mental Health Matters Round, combining sport, fun and the importance of mental health and community connection.

The day saw Steel United take on Westlands United, with special guests Melissa Barbieri and Ajak Riak joining the event to engage with the Whyalla community. The visiting soccer stars proved particularly popular with younger attendees, taking the time to meet families, have a kick with the kids and even lend a hand with face painting.

There was plenty happening away from the pitch too, with live music, free family-friendly activities and stilt walkers, which were a particular highlight.

The new Mental Health Matters Round uniforms also made their debut and were well received by players, families and spectators. The uniforms helped bring the Mental Health Matters message onto the pitch, providing another visible reminder of the campaign’s focus on breaking down stigma, raising awareness and encouraging conversations about mental health.

Headspace Whyalla Youth and Community Engagement Officer Kasey Petiford said it was great to see the community welcome and enjoy the activities and message behind the round.

“It was wonderful to see so many young people and families getting involved and really embracing everything the day had to offer,” Ms Pettiford said.

“Days like this are about more than what happens on the field. They bring people together, create opportunities for connection and help make conversations about mental health a normal part of our community.”

The campaign continues this Saturday, 22 August, at Swandel Park, where Wanderers will take on Croatia.

Former professional footballers Bruce Djite and Robert Cornthwaite will be special guests on the day, with meet and greets, signings and giveaways, along with the Speak & Share team and custom merchandise, face painting and free family-friendly activities.

Mental Health Matters Round is made possible through the support of local organisations, sporting clubs, community groups and sponsors working together to raise awareness and strengthen connections across the Whyalla community.
