Score a free native plant…help the environment!
It’s nearly that time of year again, when you can score a free native plant thanks to Whyalla City Council’s National Tree Day celebration!
This annual giveaway is an opportunity to brighten your garden while supporting Whyalla’s natural environment and local wildlife.
Council’s Waste Education Officer, Charuka Sanduni, said the giveaway was a great way for the community to get involved with sustainability efforts.
“As well as assisting the community by giving away free native plants, it’s also an opportunity to educate residents about the important role these native species play in our local environment,” Ms Sanduni said.
“They support biodiversity, require less water, and reduce the need for chemical fertilisers, so the more we can get planted around our city, the more we’re improving long-term environmental outcomes.
“So, you’re not only getting a free plant, you’re helping our ecosystem – it’s a win-win!”

It’ll first in, best dressed at the council nursery rear gate in Ada Ryan Gardens on Saturday 25 July, with hundreds of native shrubs to be handed out from 9am-12pm. Each visitor can collect one native shrub, which have been grown and supplied by the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens in Port Augusta.
Council staff will be on site to offer advice on how to plant and care for your new greenery, including the best spots to grow them at home.
