Open-Air Gallery launch celebrating student art and Cuttlefish
The community is invited to attend the launch of the Open-Air Gallery, a vibrant public art project celebrating Whyalla’s world-famous Giant Australian Cuttlefish. The free event will take place on Tuesday, 12 May, from 5pm to 7pm at the Whyalla Jetty.
This exciting initiative has brought together students from across Whyalla, generating more than 550 creative contributions from local primary schools, secondary schools, and early learning centres, including Hincks Avenue Primary School, Long Street Primary School, Nicolson Avenue Primary School, Whyalla Stuart Primary School, Samaritan College campuses, Whyalla Secondary College, and McRitchie Crescent Children’s Services Centre.
Delivered in partnership between Whyalla City Council and Alligator Energy, the Open-Air Gallery aims to celebrate the Giant Australian Cuttlefish while raising awareness and educating the community ahead of the annual Cuttlefest season.

Whyalla City Council Community Activation Officer Chloe Fisher said the project has provided a valuable opportunity to engage young people while showcasing the region’s unique marine environment.
“It’s been wonderful to see students connect with Whyalla’s marine life in such a creative and engaging way,” Ms Fisher said.
“The Giant Australian Cuttlefish are fascinating and full of character, and this project reflects that while helping students learn more about them. There’s a real sense of pride in what has been created, and it’s something the whole community can enjoy as we approach Cuttlefest.”

Community members are encouraged to attend and enjoy an evening of entertainment, including live music, face painting, and roving performances. Event highlights include alligator-themed performers, Spencer the brand-new cuttlefish mascot, live music by Ashton Hillman, and roving artists from D’faces featuring acrobatics and interactive bubble play.
Free food and refreshments will be available, with the Rotary van serving hot chips and donuts, alongside complimentary cookies provided by Shakira’s Sweet Treats.
The Open-Air Gallery forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community connections, support local talent, and showcase Whyalla’s natural attractions for both residents and visitors.
