Michaela’s everyday dedication earns statewide recognition

For Whyalla Early Learning Centre educator Michaela-Anne Michie, following children’s curiosity, matching their enthusiasm and helping them feel included are simply part of doing a job she loves.

That everyday dedication has now earned her the Early Childhood Educator of the Year award at South Australia’s Flying Start Early Childhood Awards.

Nominated by her colleagues, Michaela said the recognition came as a surprise.

“I honestly didn’t think I was going to win. When they announced my name, I was shocked, and I think we all looked at each other not knowing what to do,” Michaela said.

“It’s been overwhelming in a good way. I didn’t realise I was doing anything extra. What feels normal to me is what other people have been telling me is going above and beyond.”

Working in the centre’s four-year-old kindergarten program, Michaela helps create learning experiences that respond to each child’s interests, strengths and needs.

Her contributions include designing and 3D-printing educational resources in her own time, from imaginative play materials to tools that help children explore counting and patterns.

She has also helped introduce visual communication resources and daily routines across the centre, supporting children to express their needs, understand transitions and participate more confidently.

Sensory activities, quiet spaces and resources that help children recognise and manage their emotions are another important part of her approach, with practical tools also shared with families to support children at home.

For Michaela, the most enjoyable part of the role is joining children in their discoveries.

“I love their sense of wonder. Following their ideas and seeing where they take us is amazing,” she said.

Alongside working full-time and raising five children, Michaela is studying towards a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education. She has completed her Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, as well as further studies in psychology, youth counselling and mental health. The award includes a learning grant to support her continued professional development.

Michaela said the recognition also reflected the encouragement and support of her colleagues.

“I wouldn’t be where I am without the people here. They’ve supported me, encouraged me and helped me keep growing and knowing they took the time to nominate me makes it even more special.”
