Major step towards new Steelworks Ownership

City of Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone welcomes today’s announcement from the Albanese and Malinauskas Governments that the sale of the Whyalla Steelworks has progressed to a shortlist of two bidders as the process enters its final stages.

Mayor Stone said, “The Whyalla community is very optimistic about our future following the South Australian Government’s decision to place the former owner into administration last year and to rigorously seek a new owner that will secure the long-term future of both the Steelworks and Whyalla.”

“We are thrilled that the sale process has attracted genuine international interest and look forward to working with both the Federal and State Governments and the new owner to transform the Steelworks into a modern, low-emissions facility.”

“The success of the sale process is essential to enable our city to evolve into a contemporary model of a South Australian Regional Capital City - one that is not only economically productive, but also socially vibrant and environmentally resilient. This will underpin Whyalla’s contribution to both state and national interests.” Mayor Stone said.

Whyalla City Council acknowledges and appreciates the ongoing joint funding from the Federal and State Governments to fund the administrator’s costs at the facility, to maintain safe operations, pay wages and suppliers, and undertake critical works to improve the Steelworks’ prospects of a sale to a new owner.

“Today, Whyalla is one step closer to a solid footing - a footing that will ensure sovereign steelmaking capability and enable low-emissions manufacturing in Australia. Whyalla is blessed to have a strategic pit-to-port asset, abundant high grade magnetite reserves, and some of the world’s best wind and solar resources supporting renewable energy, which has the potential of creating more value and jobs.” said Mayor Stone.

“We are pleased that we are now down to two high quality bidders shortlisted for the sales process and look forward to the conclusion of the sale process later this year.”
