Information Sessions to support prospective council candidates
Community members interested in learning more about becoming a councillor are invited to attend upcoming “So, You Want to Be a Councillor?” information sessions on Monday, May 26.
The sessions are designed to help residents better understand the role of a councillor, what the position involves, and the local government election process ahead of the 2026 South Australian council elections.
Two sessions will be available, both on May 26:
- Face-to-face session in the Council Chamber from 12:30pm to 1:30pm
- Online-only session from 7:00pm to 8:00pm
South Australia’s next periodic local government elections will take place in November 2026, with candidate nominations opening on 25 August 2026 and closing on 8 September 2026.
Council elections provide an opportunity for community members to help shape the future of their local area. Local government decisions influence many aspects of everyday life, including roads, parks, libraries, recreation facilities, and community services.
Residents are encouraged to consider nominating for council, regardless of their professional background or experience. Councils benefit from a diverse range of voices, skills, and perspectives that reflect the broader community.
Community members are also reminded to ensure they are enrolled to vote. People who live, own property, or operate a business within a council area may be eligible to vote in council elections.
Voting in South Australian council elections is conducted through postal ballots, making it simple and accessible for electors to participate.
Key election dates include:
- Candidate nominations open: 25 August 2026
- Candidate nominations close: 8 September 2026
- Voting packs mailed to electors: 16–22 October 2026
- Close of voting: 11 November 2026
