Give furniture a second life instead of dumping it
Whyalla City Council is encouraging residents to think twice before dumping unwanted furniture, with local organisation ADRA Whyalla offering donation and collection services that help both the community and the environment.
Furniture remains one of the most commonly illegally dumped items across Whyalla, with lounges, mattresses, tables, cupboards, and other household goods regularly left on roadsides, vacant land, and public spaces. Many of these items could instead be donated to local organisations where they can be reused by families and individuals in need.
ADRA Whyalla accepts clean, reusable furniture donations and can even arrange collection directly from residents’ homes, making it easier for the community to dispose of larger items responsibly. Alongside its op shop and community pantry services, ADRA supports local residents experiencing hardship by providing affordable household goods, clothing, furniture, and emergency relief assistance.

Council is reminding residents that leaving unwanted furniture outside organisations after hours or dumping it in public spaces is not considered donating and may result in clean-up costs and safety concerns for the wider community. There are also several free waste and recycling services available throughout Whyalla to help residents dispose of unwanted items responsibly, with more information available at Free Waste and Recycling Services Around Whyalla.
Helen, Manager of ADRA Whyalla, said the organisation welcomes donations, with collection available for residents unable to drop items off themselves.
“We’re always in need of furniture and appreciate donations of items that are clean and in good condition,” she said.
“Funds raised through our op shop go straight back into supporting the community through food parcels, welfare assistance, affordable meals, and free fruit, vegetables and bread during the week.
“By donating to ADRA instead of dumping unwanted items, people are helping local families and supporting important local community services.”
Residents are encouraged to consider whether unwanted furniture and household items could be reused or donated before being thrown away, helping keep Whyalla cleaner while supporting organisations making a real difference locally.
Support local services and don’t illegally dump, so we can all continue to Enjoy Whyalla!
