From paper to public art: Students to showcase work on Whyalla Jetty

Whyalla’s circular jetty is set to become a showcase of creativity, with local students invited to take part in an exciting new Open-Air Gallery project as part of Cuttlefest 2026.

Delivered by Whyalla City Council in partnership with Alligator Energy, the initiative will see student artwork transformed into decals and installed along the jetty. Students of all ages are encouraged to take part by designing artwork using provided templates, with inspiration drawn from marine life, including cuttlefish, underwater scenes and ocean themed designs.

Selected artworks will be displayed along the jetty and may also feature in other locations across the city during the Cuttlefest season, offering young creatives a unique opportunity to have their work publicly exhibited.

Whyalla City Council Youth Activation Officer Chloe Fisher said the project is a fantastic way to celebrate creativity while connecting young people to the community, “seeing their artwork brought to life on the jetty will be an exciting and proud moment, not just for the students, but for their families and the wider community during Cuttlefest.”

Alligator Energy’s Jeffrey Sterlson said the organisation is proud to support an initiative that brings the community together, “we’re thrilled to partner with Whyalla City Council on this creative project that highlights the talent of local students. Transforming the jetty into an open-air gallery is a fantastic way to engage the community and create something that everyone can enjoy.”

To get involved, students can download the artwork templates here or collect a hard copy from the Whyalla Public Library. Entries can be emailed to chloe.fisher@whyalla.sa.gov.au or returned as a hard copy at the library.

Completed designs must be submitted by Friday, 10 April 2026.

The Open-Air Gallery will be officially launched during Cuttlefest 2026, with further event details to be announced.
