Foreshore Beach Replenishment Works set to begin in May
The Foreshore Beach Replenishment project, supported by the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) Coast Protection Board, will focus on replenishing sand and improving natural coastal defences along the Whyalla Foreshore.
Works will take place between the Caravan Park and the marina breakwater, where sand and accumulated seagrass wrack have been building up offshore and along the shoreline.
As part of the project, approximately 3,500 cubic metres of sand and beach wrack will be harvested using an excavator and dump truck. This material will then be strategically relocated and placed in front of the existing frontal dunes between the Caravan Park and the Whyalla Waves Café.
The sand and seagrass blend will be shaped to sit approximately 500mm below the height of the seawall, forming a sacrificial foredune designed to absorb the impact of coastal conditions.
These works are being undertaken in preparation for the mid-May high tides, with the newly formed foredune playing a critical role in protecting the established vegetated dunes located along the seaward side of the Foreshore Boardwalk.
By reinforcing this natural barrier, the project aims to minimise potential erosion and damage to the Foreshore environment during periods of increased tidal activity.
Works will be carried out by local contractor Whyalla Earthworks from Monday 11 May to Friday 15 May.
During the project, pedestrians are asked to maintain a safe distance from the worksite and operating machinery, with spotters on site to assist in managing public safety.
Whyalla City Council thanks the community for its cooperation while these important works are undertaken to help protect and preserve the Foreshore for future use.
