Council celebrates Whyalla Business and Tourism award win
Whyalla’s Christmas on the Avenue celebrations have been recognised at the Whyalla Business and Tourism Awards, with the 2025 Christmas Pageant winning the Contribution to Tourism Award.
Announced at the recent awards ceremony, the win recognises the combined effort, hard work and commitment that goes into making the Pageant a special event for the Whyalla community.

Mayor Phill Stone said the award belonged to everyone who helped make the event happen.
“There’s a lot of coordination and last-minute problem-solving behind a Christmas Pageant, but there’s also a huge amount of heart,” Mayor Stone said.
“People give up their evenings and weekends to build floats, organise costumes and get everything ready. Seeing all that effort travelling down Nicolson Avenue, with families waving from the sidelines, is pretty special.
“This award is something everyone involved can feel proud of. A huge thank you to our dedicated working group, sponsors, volunteers, schools, businesses and community groups. Without them there would be no Pageant – we hope you’re enjoying this win as much as we are!”

The recognition comes as preparations continue for this year’s Christmas on the Avenue on Saturday 21 November. The OneSteel Christmas Pageant will travel along Nicolson Avenue, from Russell Street to Ekblom Street, from 3pm to 4.30pm.
Celebrations will continue at the After Pageant Market in Civic Park from 4.30pm to 7pm. Coordinated by the Whyalla Show Society, the market will feature food and drinks, local makers, gifts and family activities.
“We’d love to see everyone back along Nicolson Avenue this year, cheering on the floats and enjoying an afternoon together,” Mayor Stone said.

Council is also congratulating school-based trainee Joyisha on her nomination in the inaugural School Based Trainees and Apprentices award category.

While Joyisha did not take out the award, her recognition in the new category marks a significant achievement. She has made a valuable contribution to council’s City Development team, approaching her traineeship with enthusiasm, professionalism and a willingness to learn across different areas.
Her nomination also highlights the value of council’s career pathways framework and partnerships with local secondary schools. School-based traineeships give young people opportunities to gain practical experience, build skills and explore career options while contributing to their community.
Council thanks Joyisha for her contribution and wishes her continued success as she progresses through her traineeship.
