Community feedback shapes expanded Splash Play Plaza

Whyalla City Council has expanded the footprint of the city’s new Splash Play Plaza wet area in response to feedback received from the community, creating a far more exciting area for kids to enjoy!

Council has been working with Outside Ideas to explore the additional features now incorporated into the splash area – you can see the updated concept design in the image below.

The expanded design will build on the project’s aim of creating an exciting, welcoming and family-friendly space that can be enjoyed by all community members and visitors.

Additional features include:

  • Larger double-splash bucket (more kids can get soaked at once!)
  • Spray tunnel
  • Spray cannon
  • Water spray frog
  • More interactive water-play elements

General Manager City Growth Jodie Perone said the review of the final water-play elements felt a little underwhelming, and with several residents sharing that view, council was prompted to have a rethink on how it could deliver the best possible outcome for the space.

“It’s important that this delivers what the community wants, so we’ve expanded the design to make it more exciting and enable even more kids to enjoy it at once,” Ms Perone said.

While early works kicked off in September with the installation of site fencing; establishment of the site offices; and early surveying / preparation works; the intensive work has started this week, with Outside Ideas beginning site clearing, demolition and construction works.

Parking will remain available throughout construction, although the number of spaces near the project area will be temporarily reduced, particularly near the current playground. Visitors are encouraged to use the available on-street parking along Ada Ryan Gardens and throughout the foreshore area.
