Community engagement policy endorsed by council
Whyalla City Council has updated its Community Engagement Policy and is keen to hear from the community before it’s put into action.
The policy is designed to make it easier for the community to be part of local decision-making by outlining the various ways council will seek residents’ feedback.
The updated policy has been developed in line with changes to the South Australian Government’s new Community Engagement Charter, introduced under the Local Government Act 1999. The Charter aims to create a more modern, accessible and transparent approach to consultation across all South Australian councils.
The policy has now been endorsed by council for community consultation, with residents now having the opportunity to help shape how council engages with the community.
Mayor Phill Stone said the updated policy was all about making community engagement more approachable and accessible for local residents.
“Good decisions come from good conversations, and we know the people of Whyalla always have plenty to say,” Mayor Stone said.
“This updated policy is really about making it easier and clearer for residents to jump into the conversation, whether that’s online, in person, or through physical or digital submissions.
“We don’t want community engagement to feel like reading a rulebook. We want people to feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions and helping shape the future of Whyalla.
“At the end of the day, no one knows our community better than the people who live here, so we want to make sure everyone has the chance to be part of the process.”
The updated policy outlines several levels of community engagement based on the significance of the decision or project, ranging from informing the community through to holding public meetings on major council matters.
Residents can review the draft policy here from page 57 or can ask for a physical copy at our Civic Building on Grundel Street, or the library on Ekblom Street.
