Clean-up Whyalla and reward your community group!
Whyalla City Council is calling on you to help improve the look of our city this March, offering incentive packages to local groups to be part of this year’s Clean-up Australia Day.
Council is seeking community volunteers to organise small groups to clean up right across the city. To reward your efforts, you’ll receive a donation to your club or organisation to hold your own ‘thank you’ BBQ, plus free dumping at the Veolia Waste Transfer Station, as well as publicity for your efforts via council’s Facebook page.
Mayor Phill Stone said this opportunity was quite timely, with residents expressing concern recently about the level of illegal dumping across the city.
“Illegal dumping was the lowest-scored council service in last year’s community survey, which shows it’s a major issue for our city,” Mayor Stone said.
“We’ll be rolling out several initiatives throughout this year to help tackle this problem, but it’s more than just a council issue – it’s something the entire community needs to do their part to fix.
“This is one way you can show your commitment to the cause and help make our city a more attractive place for everyone to live in.
Registration for Clean-up Australia Day is free for communities and schools (businesses pay a small fee) and includes a free clean-up kit with everything you need to run a safe and impactful event (including public liability insurance cover).
Mayor Stone said it was up to each group to register their clean-up as either a public event where anyone can join, or a closed event just for their members and families.
“Although Clean-up Australia Day is officially held on 1 March, we realise that doesn’t work for everyone, so we’re asking groups to pick a day in March where you can gather your members, families and friends – even ask the broader community to get involved – and choose a location that needs some TLC,” he said.
“We’ll also be rolling up our sleeves and doing our own clean-up event with council staff and elected members to get hands-on in helping clean up Whyalla.”
You can register your group at https://www.cleanup.org.au/clean-up-australia-day/ and send your registration details to waste@whyalla.sa.gov.au. Council will then contact you to discuss your event and organise logistics.
Be sure to hurry to secure one of the limited incentive packages on offer by contacting council before the cut-off date of 5pm Friday 6 March 2026 by emailing waste@whyalla.sa.gov.au, and join us in our efforts to help our community Enjoy Whyalla!
