Call for Nominations for Outstanding Citizens

There are many locals in our community who give their heart and soul to make Whyalla a better place. Often just doing what they do for the love of it and not the recognition. We want to see them recognised and we need your help to nominate them for an Australia Day Award.

Nominations are now open for the 2023 Australia Day Citizen Of The Year Awards and we’re calling on the community to take the time to help nominate these wonderful individuals.

Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin said the awards recognised individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to the community, not only throughout 2022, but across a number of years.

“The Australia Day Citizen Of The Year Awards are special, because we get to publicly recognise and thank the people who give so much to our community,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“These people, who so thoroughly deserve these awards, generally aren’t the sort of people that seek recognition, so it’s vitally important that others in the community take the time to put their names forward and nominate them.”

Nomination forms are available from Council’s website, Civic Building on Darling Terrace, and the Whyalla Public Library. Forms are to be completed and returned to the Civic Building.

Nominations close at 5pm on Wednesday, 30 November 2022.

About the awards:

The citizen, senior citizen and young citizen categories reward and recognise individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution during the past year, while having regard to their previous achievements and ongoing contribution over and above normal employment duties.

Outstanding contribution and community service include areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary service, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and wellbeing of the community.

To be eligible, the person must be an Australian citizen, and between 16 and 30 years of age on 26 January 2023 for the young citizen category, or aged 60 years or over for the senior citizen award.

Community service awards recognise residents who have made an outstanding voluntary contribution in the field of community service in Whyalla.
