Whyalla Public Library reopens with a new look
The Whyalla Public Library is officially reopening today after a month-long closure for essential upgrades. The community is invited back into a refreshed and more accessible space.
Throughout March, the library underwent significant improvements, including the installation of new carpet and the replacement of shelving with modern options that comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
Mayor Phill Stone said the reopening marks an important step forward for the city’s library.
“It’s fantastic to see the library open its doors again! These upgrades are about ensuring our services remain modern and inclusive, not just for today, but well into the future.” he said.
“With almost 57,000 people visiting the library in 2024, the new look will undoubtedly ensure this figure continues to grow, particularly in view of the new layout and comfortable facilities. I’ve already had the tremendous feedback from library users praising the reopening and new design. They love it!”
In the final week before the reopening, the library team worked to restock shelves, set-up new computer desks, and return resources to their rightful places, ensuring everything was ready for the public’s return.

Library Coordinator Natalie Williams shared the staff's excitement about welcoming the community back.
“We’ve really missed seeing our regular visitors and can’t wait to show everyone the fresh new space,” Ms. Williams said.
“We invite everyone to come in, explore the new space, and borrow their favourite books—or maybe discover a new one!”
During the closure, council provided regular updates on the library's progress on the community works page, sharing progress photos and information about alternative services available. If you are looking for a regular update on community works, please head to that page for information.
Now that the upgrades are complete and all services restored, community members can once again enjoy everything the library has to offer— including books, public computers, JP services, and popular programs like Gigglepots.
