Whyalla expands Mental Health Matters Round to Netball

Following the success of last year’s Mental Health Matters Round (MHMR) in Football, the Whyalla City Council, in collaboration with headspace Whyalla, Wellbeing SA, and the Whyalla Football League, is proud to announce the expansion of MHMR to include the Whyalla Netball Association.

The expansion marks an exciting step forward in mental health advocacy. This initiative aims to unite Whyalla through sport by raising awareness, breaking down stigmas, and encouraging important conversations around mental health—on and off the court.

Council’s Youth Activation Officer Chloe Fisher said the expansion into netball reflects the growing support in creating safe, inclusive spaces to talk about mental health.

“The MHMR is more than just a round of sport—it’s about creating a culture where mental health is a priority,” Ms Fisher said.

“We’re really excited to expand into netball this year and give even more young people the opportunity to participate, learn, and lead the way in changing the conversation around mental health.”

To celebrate the first-ever netball round, community members are invited to take part in a unique Dress Design Competition. Participants are encouraged to incorporate this year’s slogan, “Mental Health Matters – on and off the court”, and include either “Mental Health Matters Round” or “MHMR” in their designs. The winning design will be worn by players during the round, and winners will receive a $50 voucher and a netball dress featuring their design.

Designs can be submitted to council or headspace, with entries closing May 5. For more information, contact Chloe via email at chloe.fisher@whyalla.sa.gov.au or phone 0427 165 232.

This year’s MHMR events will take place across two weekends in August:

  • Netball round – Friday, 16 August
  • Football round – Friday, 23 August

In 2024, MHMR saw hundreds gather in support of youth mental health, with special guests like AFL stars Rory Sloane and James Podsiadly, custom-designed guernseys and a live music fundraiser. This year, the momentum continues with more special guests (announced soon!).
