Recognise Whyalla's Brightest - nominate now

The search for Whyalla’s most dedicated and deserving community members has officially begun, with nominations now open for the 2026 Citizen of the Year Awards.

This is your chance to celebrate the contributions of individuals and groups who make Whyalla thrive. Nominations will close on 5pm Friday, October 31 so don’t miss the opportunity to honour those who give so much to our community.

Mayor Phill Stone said, “I encourage our community to get behind these awards so that our city can rightly acknowledge some of our deserved residents who make such a difference to us all.

Yes, you will need to complete a nomination form, and this may require you to do a little research - even combine with others to help present the right amount of information. But your efforts will be well worth it as Whyalla has so many unsung heroes to whom we should be indebted for their outstanding contributions.

Please don’t assume someone else will do it, as that could see a disappointing result – and don’t leave it to the last minute and run out of time. Whyalla would be much the poorer without so many incredible community members who go above and beyond in their tireless efforts.

Now is the time to ensure we can say a sincere thank you to them, so please consider how you can play your part.”

The annual awards recognise Whyalla’s generous residents and achievers, who give their time and energy to enrich the lives of others. The Citizen, Young Citizen and Senior Citizen of the Year categories acknowledge individuals who have made noteworthy contributions during the past year while also recognising their long-term efforts beyond normal employment duties. Community Service Awards highlight outstanding dedication to a single organisation or field.

Contributions may span areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary service, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that advances the wellbeing of our community. To be eligible, nominees must be Australian citizens, with Young Citizen nominees under 30 years of age on 26 January 2026 and Senior Citizen nominees aged 65 years or older.

If you know someone who makes Whyalla a better place, don’t let their efforts go unrecognised.
