The Whyalla Maritime Museum is inviting the community to visit a newly completed exhibition featuring a significant piece of naval history - a ceremonial sword belonging to Neven Robinson Read, former commander of HMAS Whyalla during 1944-1945.

This addition to the museum was generously donated by Commander Read’s family and marks the first artefact directly related to the ship’s World War II commanders in the collection. The sword, which carries over 200 years of military tradition, is adorned with a gold-plated brass hilt, a white fish-skin grip, and a distinctive brass lion pommel.

Following a clean-up and preservation process carried out locally, the sword is now ready for public viewing—the final stage of this donation. Now housed in an exhibition case within the museum’s World War II Gallery, the sword is displayed alongside a photograph of Commander Read, honouring his service and connection to the HMAS Whyalla.

Whyalla Maritime Museum Curator Paul Mazourek said the new exhibition is a proud moment for the museum and the state.

"This ceremonial sword is a tangible link to HMAS Whyalla’s wartime history and a tribute to Commander Read’s service,” Mr Mazourek said.

“We are incredibly grateful to his family for entrusting us with this important artefact, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the legacy of those who served their country.

“The significance of this piece extends beyond Whyalla, holding state-wide importance as a rare naval artefact. We invite everyone to visit the museum and experience this incredible piece of history firsthand."

The Whyalla Maritime Museum welcomes visitors to explore the new exhibition! Open Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm, Sat, Sun and public holidays 10am – 4pm.
