Self-checkout now available through LibrariesSA App

Borrowing from the Whyalla Public Library has just become a whole lot simpler, thanks to the introduction of self-checkout functionality through the LibrariesSA mobile app.

The new feature allows users to borrow items using their smartphone. While this change doesn’t replace traditional borrowing methods, it gives visitors more flexibility in how they use the library.

Library Coordinator Natalie Williams said the self-checkout option is about meeting people where they are.

“We know some people prefer a quick, independent experience, while others still enjoy the interaction with staff,” she said.

The checkout process is generally seamless: users scan one item at a time, and borrowed items appear in their app account shortly after.

The checkout process is simple and user-friendly, designed to work smoothly on a variety of devices and networks. Here's how it works:

  1. Download the LibrariesSA app Available free on the App Store and Google Play – search for LibrariesSA.
  2. Open the app Inside the Library
The Self-Check icon will appear at the top of the screen. You can also find it via the home screen under the "My Account" menu.
  3. Scan your item
Hold the item close to your device and follow the prompts to scan the barcode.
  4. Confirmation
The item will show up in your checkout list in the app.
  5. Borrow for linked accounts (optional)
If you've linked family accounts in the app, you can select which account to check out to.
  6. You're done!
Once successfully checked out, the item’s security is automatically disabled and you can walk out with your loan.

Staff are encouraging users to give it a try and are available to help with setup or any questions. A short tutorial video is available here:
