To celebrate National Tree Day, Whyalla City Council is giving residents the chance to take home a native plant completely free!

This annual giveaway is an opportunity to brighten up your garden while supporting Whyalla’s natural environment and local wildlife.

It’s first in, best dressed at the Council Nursery rear gate in Ada Ryan Gardens on Saturday, 26 July, with hundreds of native shrubs to be handed out between 9am and 12 noon.

Project Manager Landscape, Samuel Bourne, said the giveaway was a great way to connect the community with sustainability efforts.
“Native plants are an important part of our local environment as they support biodiversity, require less water, and reduce the need for chemical fertilisers,” she said. “This event is about encouraging long-term environmental responsibility, so be sure to come down and get a plant!”

Each visitor can collect one native shrub, grown and supplied by the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens in Port Augusta. Council staff will also be on site to offer advice on how to plant and care for your new greenery, including the best spots to grow them at home.

Please note there will be no public access to the nursery compound itself. The plant collection will take place at the rear gate in Ada Ryan Gardens. Residents are asked to follow staff instructions and be patient if queues form.

This initiative is proudly run by Whyalla City Council. For more information, click here or contact council on (08) 8640 3444.
