Dredging works to commence at Whyalla Marina

The Whyalla City Council will soon commence dredging works at the Whyalla Marina to ensure the long-term safety and usability of the facility, with works set to begin on Monday, 10 November.

The project, awarded to Maritime Constructions through a tender process, will involve the removal of sand and sediment to restore the marina’s original design depths. While dredging operations are underway, marina car park access will remain open.

Manager Capital Works Delivery Les Jones said the dredging was critical in maintaining the marina as a safe and functional community asset, with a major focus on minimising potential environmental impacts.

“The works are being carried out under strict environmental controls approved by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), so our marine life – including our friendly dolphins – will remain safe. If any dolphins are sighted near the vessel, work will stop immediately to ensure there are no direct interactions,” Mr Jones said.

With the boat ramp works being delayed due to contractor availability, the two projects will now occur at a similar time. However, there is a reasonable distance between the boat ramp and the dredging works, so this is not expected to cause any issues.

By completing both works together, council will actually minimise the overall period of inconvenience for marina users. Council will provide an update soon regarding exact timing of the boat ramp upgrade - you can see regular updates about the upgrade here.
