Cuttlefest has been recognised for showcasing Whyalla as a premier tourist destination, winning the Whyalla Business and Tourism Contribution to Tourism Award.

Held each June and July, the festival continues to grow as a tourism and cultural experience, offering everything from snorkelling tours and glass-bottom boat rides to community festivals, art workshops, and children’s activities.

This year, about 13,000 vehicles passed through the dive site area, with 8,000 people enjoying one of the various marine experiences now on offer. This resulted in nearly $10 million being spent in the local economy, with visitor spending up more than 4% during the festival.

Cuttlefest has become far more than just a diving experience by branching out into opportunities for the entire community, with thousands of locals enjoying a host of events including the Salty Sea’esta; Cuttlefest Art Prize; school holiday programs; and visiting Sparkle the inflatable cuttlefish, to name just a few.

This year also saw the introduction of the Cuttlefish Concierge pilot program – made possible by support from Santos – with local marine enthusiast Carlo Possagno helping visitors feel welcome while entertaining them with his extensive marine knowledge and storytelling.

Mayor Phill Stone praised the Whyalla City Council staff whose excellent work resulted in such a great outcome for the city.

“This festival attracts visitors from across the globe to not only marvel at the unique phenomenon of the Giant Australian Cuttlefish, but also to enjoy everything Whyalla has to offer,” Mayor Stone.

“This wouldn’t happen without the hard work of our people who have helped deliver real benefits for our local economy, while also providing plenty of activities for our community to enjoy, so this award is recognition of their efforts.”

Mayor Stone also congratulated the Whyalla Visitor Centre’s Halle Couzner for being nominated for Trainee of the Year at the awards.
