Council supports job transition initiatives
In response to recent job losses and redundancies, Whyalla City Council is supporting numerous initiatives aimed at reskilling workers and supporting career transitions.
These programs, offered at no cost to participants, aim to give residents the skills and resources to find employment as quickly as possible.
Mayor Phill Stone said this was a critical time to offer these types of programs to the community.
''Given the current job losses, combined with the ongoing downturn over the past 12 months, programs like these are vital to ensuring our community can access support and find a new job sooner rather than later,” he said.
“The least we can do is provide facilities for these programs, while helping spread the word to ensure as many residents as possible are aware of what’s available.
“We will also be looking for opportunities within our own projects for those impacted by job losses; and will work with the State Government to identify suitable roles in their hydrogen project.”
Operating Your Futures Program
This federally-funded initiative by the Civil Contractors Federation of SA is designed to reskill mature-age workers. Open to individuals aged 45 and over, the program focuses on training in plant operations—a high-demand field listed on Australia’s National Skills Shortage List.
Successful participants will gain nationally recognised qualifications in areas such as safety observation, underground services protection, and plant machine operations, including experience with excavators and skid steer loaders. A Plant Machine Training Simulator will also be available for safe, practical learning.
Local residents aged 44 years and over, particularly those recently made redundant, are encouraged to apply via the QR code or contacting the Civil Contractors Federation of SA for more information.

Free Career Transition Support Service
In addition to the Operating Your Futures program, council is hosting the Career Transition Support Service, co-funded by RESA and the Local Jobs Program. This service provides free, professional, face-to-face career development sessions tailored to individuals looking to commence, transition, or build their careers. Support is also available for those navigating redundancy or job loss, with assistance in updating resumes, retraining, and finding new opportunities.
