Council continues to support the Tanderra Craft Village
Whyalla City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Tanderra Craft Village, following an investment of $350,000 over the next five years to ensure the site’s safe and functional operation.
This long-term investment highlights council’s recognition of the vital role the village plays in supporting local artisans and strengthening the city’s tourism aspects. The funding will contribute to the site's operational needs, including building and grounds maintenance, utilities, fire safety, and pest control.
Mayor Phill Stone highlighted the significance of Tanderra within the community, “Council’s investment in Tanderra is a commitment to preserving a space that holds social, cultural and economic value for Whyalla,” Mayor Stone said. “This decision not only supports its ongoing use and activation but also lays the groundwork for a sustainable and bright future. We’re taking a practical, forward-thinking approach to ensure this community space remains viable and valuable for years to come.”
Council has also initiated the development of a masterplan for the city’s key ‘tourism precinct’—an integrated area that will cover Tanderra Craft Village, the Steel Cap Gallery, Visitor Information Centre, Maritime Museum, and a potential designated Overnight Stay RV Camping area. Developed in collaboration with key stakeholders this masterplan aims to develop visitation, activation and the overall visitor experience.
The Tanderra Group continues to be a cornerstone of community life in Whyalla, operating every day of the week and hosting monthly market days that bring together up to 80 stallholders. These events promote local enterprise, cultural exchange, and social inclusion, providing opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to connect and participate.
A recent meeting held between Council’s executive team and Tanderra’s Board and Financial Members confirmed Council’s continued support and outlined the next steps for the lease arrangement, including a proposed new lease fee.
Shirley Harrison, Tanderra Group chairperson welcomed the commitment from council.
“We are grateful for the support from Whyalla City Council. This funding gives our community confidence that Tanderra can remain operational. We look forward to working with council on the masterplan and future vision for this treasured precinct,” Ms Harrison said.
