Civic Park Playground set for major upgrade
Civic Park is set to receive a major upgrade, with its playground to be revitalised for the first time in nearly 20 years.
This redevelopment will feature brand-new play equipment, as well as a car park extension; more open space facing Nicolson Avenue (improving visibility and creating a safer environment for families); as well as other upgrades to the surrounds. The works will be delivered in stages, with the initial period expected to run from June through to August.
Council is seeking community input to help shape both the initial and future stages of the upgrade. Manager of City Activation Gail Rostig said it was essential that the new playground reflect the wants and needs of the community.
“We want to create a fun and safe space that reflects what our community – especially our young people – really want,” Ms Rostig said. “This is their park, and we’re excited to hear their ideas and feedback.”
Community members are encouraged to take part in the consultation by attending one of the upcoming face-to-face sessions or completing the online survey.
Consultation opportunities include:
- Civic Park – Wednesday 7 May, 10am–2pm
- Westlands Shopping Centre (near Woolworths) – Thursday 8 May, 2pm–5pm
You can also take part by completing the survey below; to select main elements of the playground for possible inclusion in the first stage.
This survey closes on Monday, 26 May at 5pm.
Council will also directly engage with schools to ensure feedback from local youth is captured.
Local and external contractors and suppliers will be engaged throughout the process, with local businesses to be approached once community consultation concludes and the scope of the first stage is confirmed.
Mayor Phill Stone said the redevelopment is a key investment in city.
“Upgrading Civic Park is about bringing fresh energy into the heart of our city, with this upgrade making it more welcoming, safer, more inclusive, and better suited for more of our community, Mayor Stone said.
“This development will not only activate the space and provide a more modern facility for local children of various ages and abilities, but also support local jobs, which is always a focus of council projects.”
Feedback will help determine what elements the community is most excited to see in stage one of the redevelopment, while consultation will also seek ideas for future stages.
In other playground news, council will soon be utilising the community feedback received last year for the McGee Street playground, with upgrades to be installed in the coming months – keep an eye out for more updates soon!
