The search for Whyalla's brightest with Scott Leverington
06 November 2024
After being recognised for his contribution to women’s sport, Whyalla’s 2024 Community Service Award recipient Scott Leverington is calling for the community to start thinking about who they can nominate for next year’s awards.
The annual awards celebrate the city’s many generous residents who give up their time to give back to the community, with Scott recognised for his role in the Whyalla Women’s Football League.
This week we sat down with Scott to talk about the importance of these awards in our community – here’s a small sample of the conversation (full video below) :
What were you recognised for?
“I was recognised for the work that I’d done to start the senior women’s football competition in Whyalla. I was really surprised by how much enthusiasm there was in the community to have that. There’s lots of girls out there that really want to play AFLW, we just provide that structure for that to happen, so it’s been really rewarding to be involved in that.”
What does volunteering mean to you?
“It’s something that I’d never really thought of, it just comes naturally – I’ve been a volunteer since I was 19 years old, coaching kids’ football. To see the joy in the girls’ faces to be able to play a sport that they didn’t have access to previously [makes it worthwhile].
Why is it important to nominate people for Citizen of the Year awards?
“If you’ve got those people within the community that are doing outstanding work, I think it’d be really important to put a spotlight on them so they can be recognised for all the work they’re doing for the Whyalla community.”
There are numerous awards you can nominate community members for, including:
- Citizen of the Year
- Senior Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Community Service
The categories reward and recognise individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution during the past year, as well as acknowledging previous achievements and ongoing contribution over and above their normal employment duties.
