Library secures grant for early childhood literacy program

The Whyalla Public Library is excited to announce that it has received grant funding to launch a new program aimed at enhancing early childhood literacy and development. This program is still in the early stages of development and will be delivered in the new year (2025), this initiative will focus on establishing a toy library equipped with interactive play toys, each paired with educational materials and tools designed to foster language development in young children.

As part of the program, each toy will come with a card featuring words and QR codes linked to songs and activities related to the toy. These resources are specifically designed to promote auditory and language skills, helping children grow their vocabulary and engage in meaningful play.

Library Coordinator, Natalie Williams is excited for this opportunity to be delivered to the community ‘’this has been in the works for some time now and it’s great to see it moving forward. It really is a great initiative, and I know the children and families will enjoy these resources.’’

By aligning with the Words Grow Minds initiative, the program aims to address the needs of early childhood development in the Whyalla community. The toy library and its resources are designed to encourage conversations, singing, and playful interactions between children and their families. Whether through matching songs, suggested games, or even a walking adventure, the interactive toys will offer a variety of developmental benefits.

In addition to launching this exciting new program, the Whyalla Public Library is thrilled to announce an upcoming visit from best-selling author and early childhood educator Katrina Germain. Known for her popular works such as Wonderful Wasps, Germain will visit Whyalla to read from her latest book, My Dad Thinks He’s a Scream. As part of a road trip across the Eyre Peninsula, Katrina’s visit is expected in mid to late November, with further updates to be provided closer to the date.
