Whyalla City Council is pleased to announce Whyalla Waves Café as the new operators of the foreshore café.

Anil Kumar and Seeb Abid were chosen as the successful operators after numerous expressions of interest (EOIs) were received. Mr Kumar will be the owner and general manager, while Mr Abid will be the Head Chef and responsible for management duties.

The pair are looking forward to serving the community by providing an excellent customer experience, while showcasing local produce with a focus on classic café food and beverages.

“Our aim will be to create a space for locals and visitors to enjoy the scenic surrounds, where they can spend time with family and friends, and enjoy excellent food in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere,” Mr Abid said.

Mr Kumar believes the Whyalla foreshore is a prime attraction in Whyalla and understands the importance of providing quality food and exceptional service to enhance the overall experience in this area.

“We are committed to meeting and exceeding these expectations in the future - we’ll focus initially on serving simple food that is locally sourced and sustainable, then will look to gradually adapt the menu as the café evolves,.” Mr Kumar said.

“Ultimately, we want to work together with the community to make this something everyone can enjoy and recommend to their family and friends.”

Mr Kumar – who locals may be familiar with from his Masala in Whyalla business – stated that he is excited for this new venture, while emphasising that this will be a separate operation from Masala.

The new business will cater for breakfast, lunch and ‘grazing’ throughout the day. The initial menu will include:

  • Barista-made coffee
  • Breakfast foods (eggs, bacon, sausage etc)
  • Burgers
  • Fish and chips
  • Salads
  • Pastries
  • Milkshakes
  • Cakes
  • Cheese plates
  • Ice-creams
  • Fresh options such as tacos and seafood

Mayor Phill Stone said council was impressed by the variety of EOIs received and was looking forward to seeing what Whyalla Waves Café would offer.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Seeb and Anil, and we encourage the community to support them and provide feedback on the offerings they’d like to see,” Mayor Stone said.

Some of the key focuses during the initial stages of Whyalla Waves Café’s operations include:

  • Establishing partnerships with local businesses as suppliers
  • Employing local, increasing staffing as required
  • Encouraging feedback to drive ongoing improvements and expand the menu

Mayor Stone thanked previous café operators A Little Fried for their service to the community. The cafe will now be closed during the transition period between operators, with council and Whyalla Waves Café working to minimise the disruption to service during the change-over. Council will continue to provide updates as the fit-out progresses.
