Whyalla City Council has welcomed its largest group of school-based trainees (SBTs) through an innovative program in collaboration with local schools and Career Employment Group (CEG). Five students from Sunrise Christian School and Whyalla Secondary College have joined Council staff in various departments, gaining first-hand experience of their chosen fields and insight into daily operations.

The SBTs include Halle Couzner in Tourism and Events, Timana Nottle in Depot Administration, Kaitlyn Sleep in the Library with an IT focus, Courtney Watt in Community and Events, and Jett Taylor in Civil Construction.

These students bring fresh ideas, energy, and new perspectives that will drive innovation and creative problem-solving. The program provides them with practical, hands-on experience while nurturing young talent. Through this opportunity, the five SBTs acquired real-world skills that complement their academic learning, preparing them for future career pathways and contributing to the development of the local workforce.

Megan Cox, Vocational Education Pathways Manager at Whyalla Secondary College, highlighted the significance of the program, stating, "This partnership between the schools and Council provides students with a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in a real-world setting. The skills they developed through this program will be invaluable as they move into their future careers."

This initiative reflects Council's commitment to youth development, offering meaningful career pathways and ensuring students gain industry insight to help shape Whyalla's future workforce.
