Supporting the community during upgrade
The Recreation Centre upgrades are progressing well, with significant work undertaken in the past week. This included the grouting of the main pool being successfully completed, while the benches and timber panelling in the sauna have been removed and replaced (see images below). Moving forward, the next phase will involve replacing the insulation in the sauna.
As the centre undergoes essential upgrades, the Stingers Swimming Club has been using the Port Augusta Swim Centre for training sessions leading up to the upcoming swimming carnival.
Shaune Beaty from Stingers said "We are very grateful to Council and the YMCA to assist us in being able to train at the Port Augusta Swim Centre during these upgrades. Our swimmers are eager to make the most of this opportunity and showcase their talent in the upcoming carnival."
Council is proud to support this temporary relocation in order to ensure the team still gets to train for the competition. Go Stingers!
The Whyalla Aqua Aerobics Group also made the trip to Port Augusta a few weeks ago, ensuring they still get to enjoy some aquatic fun during the Rec Centre pool upgrade, which Council was proud to support.
Joy from the Aqua Aerobics Group said ''The trip was absolutely brilliant, we enjoyed being back in the water and are excited for the rec centre pool to open again. I am really pleased with how the Rec Centre has catered to the community while the upgrades have been happening. A big thank you to Whyalla City Council and the Y for this great trip!''
There have also been ongoing activities for the broader community to ensure there's still plenty for local youth to do during the pool closure. This has included roller skating, bouncy castles, mini-golf, big screen video games, ninja challenges and a host of other cool activities. Our thanks to the YMCA for doing a great job of hosting these events!
Stay tuned for more updates throughout the project.
