City Update 30 August 2024
Mental Health Matters Round success
The Whyalla community got together for the inaugural 'Mental Health Matters Round,' which proved to be a huge success!
The round saw Whyalla Football League (WFL) A-grade players play a round of football in Guernsey’s specially designed by local school students, with former AFL players Rory Sloane and James Podsiadly attending. Local services Mission Australia, headspace, Whyalla Suicide Prevention Network and Carer’s SA also came out to show their support.
A huge thank you goes out to the WFL and all the players involved. The success of the Mental Health Matters Round wouldn’t have been possible without their involvement.

Tanderra Craft Village
We have been made aware of rumours that council has made a decision to close the Tanderra Craft Village. We can confirm that this is false, as no decision has been made regarding the future of Tanderra. Due to the age of the facility, we have arranged for independent site risk and condition assessments, which are crucial to understanding any necessary actions moving forward and any potential future impacts to existing users. We are in regular contact with Tanderra representatives and have committed to hosting a meeting with the Tanderra Board and financial members following the completion of this assessment.
Mayor Phill Stone is pictured with Tanderra representatives during a recent visit to the site to continue discussions and answer questions regarding the ongoing assessments and next steps.
We will ensure that any future discussions and actions taken are well-informed and considerate of all stakeholders involved, including continuing to work closely with Tanderra representatives. We are committed to transparency and open communication and value the continued engagement of the community groups associated with Tanderra. We will provide further updates as this process progresses.

Hydrogen Jobs Plan secured development approval
The State Government’s Hydrogen Jobs Plan has announced that it has secured development approval for the project, moving Whyalla a significant step closer to becoming a global leader in hydrogen production and innovation. With this now secured, a number of early civil works packages have been released for expressions of interest, particularly targeting local business. The project team are also offering a rare opportunity for one-on-one sessions with their representatives, so local businesses can gain insight into what’s required, determine if they have the capability, and also get assistance in registering for the packages.
Mayor Phill Stone said “I encourage any local businesses and contractors with the relevant capability to take advantage of this opportunity by attending the open day to find out more, and then submitting an expression of interest.”
Further details about the scope of the Early Civil Works packages can be found here: https://gateway.icn.org.au/projects/9607

Finding a compromise for local sport venues
Whyalla City Council was faced with a difficult decision last night regarding where the Whyalla Cricket Association (WCA) and the Whyalla Women’s Football League (WWFL) would play games for their upcoming 2024/25 season. The recent introduction of the WWFL conflicts with the existing cricket season, resulting in council being unable to accommodate both sports at their favoured locations, as providing the required facilities for both codes would come at an additional, unbudgeted cost to ratepayers.
After taking into consideration the requests made by both associations, council has made the decision to allow the WCA to continue to play at Memorial Oval and the WWFL at Bennett Oval. The WCA can also use Bennett Oval once the WWFL season concludes in early December. Mayor Phill Stone said council was in a challenging position, with the associations unable to find a middle ground meaning council needed to find the most equitable, short-term solution that gave both codes an equal chance at success during this upcoming season. Please head to our website to read our full update, as well as submissions from the WCA and WWFL to gain a full understanding of the complexities of the issue: https://bit.ly/4757ZTr
Council will continue to review how it can find a place for all sports in Whyalla, including actively targeting government funding for upgraded facilities. It will also need to consider a financial model for facilities that requires more self-sufficiency from the sports and less impact on ratepayers.
