Whyalla Homelessness Sleepout and Fundraiser
For the first time, Whyalla City Council, in collaboration with Mission Australia, local businesses, and community agencies, hosted the Homelessness Sleepout and Fundraiser, bringing the community together to raise awareness and essential funds to combat homelessness in Whyalla.
This community-driven event saw local businesses, groups, and individuals unite in solidarity, with participants braving the elements for a night to better understand the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness.
Council’s Manager City Activation Gail Rostig reflected on the experience, stating that it was heartening to see such strong support for young people within Whyalla experiencing homelessness.
“For us all personally, it was one cold, uncomfortable night—something we don’t experience every night,” Ms Rostig said.

Green energy pioneer visits Whyalla
Whyalla continues to be the focus of global green energy pioneers, with a legendary Formula 1 engineer the latest looking to take advantage of our city’s hydrogen potential. Paddy Lowe – former McLaren Racing Technical Director and now CEO of Zero Petroleum – visited Whyalla with his team to view several locations and learn more about the Hydrogen Jobs Plan project. Zero is the leading producer of carbon-neutral synthetic fuel – made from just air (carbon dioxide) and water (hydrogen) – aiming to reduce reliance on oil/coal/gas-based fossil fuels. They've also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the State Government to explore investment opportunities in South Australia by 2026, with Whyalla one of the potential sites.
Mayor Phill Stone said: “Zero Petroleum is an example of the cutting-edge industries that are interested in Whyalla as a result of the State Government’s investment in hydrogen. Regardless of whether this particular prospect ends up in Whyalla, it demonstrates that the eyes of the world are squarely focused on our city and realising the major potential for our green energy future.” Read the full update here: https://bit.ly/47FpwBX
