City Update 21 June 2024

Citizenship Ceremony

Council recently held another successful Group Citizenship Ceremony, with nine Whyalla residents taking their pledge, becoming Australian Citizens! Council has chosen several significant dates this year to hold group Citizenship Ceremonies. The most recent ceremony was chosen to take place, like so many other councils, during Refugee Week which is a time to bring awareness and celebrate positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society! Help us in congratulating our latest Australian Citizens!

Government House milestone night

“The City of Whyalla is vital to South Australia’s economic and social fabric, driving growth and development across multiple sectors.”

With those words, Her Excellency, the Honourable Frances Adamson, AC, Governor of South Australia, hosted a State dinner in Government House to acknowledge and celebrate Whyalla’s significant impact on South Australia.

It was attended by an enthusiastic audience of around 70 Members of Parliament, including Premier Peter Malinauskas, State business and civic leaders, City of Whyalla Council representatives, and Whyalla business, community and youth representatives. Entertainment was provided by young Whyalla musicians Blake Brougham and Maria Alboino (pictured below with Her Excellency).

We understand the event was the first time Government House has hosted a State dinner for a regional city – highlighting its significance – and we look forward to the potential collective impact that the event will have on future discussions with government, developers and investors.

We have many challenges ahead, but this event has provided even further imperative for council to further engage and work with government and developers to address our city’s issues and significant opportunities. Senator visits Whyalla

Senator Anne Ruston - Shadow Minister for Health and Aged Care / Shadow Minister for Sport - visited Whyalla with Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey MP this week to learn more about the opportunities and challenges ahead for our city. She was keen to discuss how she can assist in lobbying the Federal Government for more programs and funding that can benefit Whyalla.

She met with several key community representatives from industry, education, health and aged care; as well as Mayor Phill Stone, Deputy Mayor Tamy Pond, and Council Members Mark Inglis and Peter Borda. We look forward to continuing to work with all sides of all levels of government to achieve positive outcomes for Whyalla.

Salty 'Sea'esta

Our Salty 'Sea'esta event was a huge success, with thousands of people coming through the gates at the Ada Ryan Gardens to enjoy all the entertainment and activities on offer. There was a variety of market and food stalls to choose from and the main stage had entertainment at all times, including a knife juggler and a fire artist. It was great to see plenty of people taking advantage of the free bus service, thanks to our sponsor Des's Cabs. We would also like to thank our other Cuttlefest sponsors Signarama Whyalla and Santos Ltd for helping bring this event to life. Check out whyalla.com/cuttlefest for more events this season!
