City Update 16 August 2024
Mental Health Matters Round

Whyalla is coming together to raise mental health awareness in our community, while providing a jam-packed weekend of awesome events and special guests!
The inaugural ‘Mental Health Matters Round’ will take place over the weekend of 23-24 August – a collaboration between Whyalla City Council, headspace and the Whyalla Football League (WFL); being funded by Wellbeing SA and Whyalla Suicide Prevention Network.
This will not only be a truly epic weekend, but also help raise money and awareness for mental health in our community. Check out the flyers for all the detail and read our full update here: https://bit.ly/3WFti9v
A huge thank you to our local sponsors Santos, Golding, Cleanaway, BOC, Stassi Consulting Engineers, Country Outback Health and Aquest for helping make the event possible.
Planting at the Foreshore

Students from Whyalla Stuart Primary School and Samaritan College's Saint Teresa’s Campus – together with council reps – have been planting native vegetation along the foreshore to help maintain the dune system while preventing sand from impacting nearby residents.
About 2,000 native tubestock will be planted once the program is finished by the end of this week. Mayor Phill Stone said it was great to have so many local students involved, who were really enjoying helping protect the environment – “Whenever these students visit the foreshore from now on, they’ll be able to see the difference they’ve made and know that it’s helping maintain our coastline.”

Take the Pledge campaign

Our Take the Pledge campaign continues to grow with over 550 households currently participating. By signing up, participants agree to responsibly dispose of food waste and other organic material in the green bin; and recyclables in the yellow bin.
Our second round of Take the Pledge 'champions' were discovered after a recent random audit of participants' bins found several with perfectly sorted rubbish, each receiving a Mitre 10 or a Whyalla Garden Centre voucher valued at $25 and a 30L Peats compost pack. Congratulations to our winners Ben, Geoff, Dawn and Ian (pictured below).
If you haven't already, be sure to Take the Pledge to help reduce your impact on the environment, while also being in the running for more great prizes! Find all the detail here: https://bit.ly/3u8EukD

Community Survey

It’s that time of year again, with Whyalla City Council seeking your feedback on its performance and how it can improve to ensure it’s meeting the needs of the community. This will be the fourth year that we’ve conducted the community survey, with the opportunity to compare our performance in the eyes of the community. This year’s survey will cover the same areas, helping demonstrate where council has improved or needs to focus more effort. Take the survey here: https://bit.ly/WhyallaCommunitySurvey24
If you have any feedback for us, please ensure you include it in the survey – comments on this post will not be incorporated into the survey results.
If you have any particular issues, you would like raised outside of the survey, be sure to use the My Local Services app (https://bit.ly/MyLocalServicesWhyalla), direct message us, or contact us direct on 8640 3444 or council@whyalla.sa.gov.au.

Hard Waste pick up

If you’ve got hard waste gathering at your property, did you know you can have it picked up free of charge? Whyalla City Council offers one free hard waste pick up for each property per year, helping reduce the impact of waste costs for residents while aiming to minimise incidents of illegal dumping.
However, it can’t just be dumped on the footpath waiting to be noticed and picked up – that’s actually illegal, attracting fines up to $1000 – there’s a process to follow to ensure it’s all done correctly. Council utilises the services of Bedford to manage the booking / pick-up service – simply call them on 8647 7711 to lock in a date, they’ll let you know the requirements, then put the waste out the night before your confirmed date, it’s that easy! Check out our update here for all the details: https://bit.ly/3YJZuLq
Be sure to pass this information on to friends / family / neighbours to help ensure everyone is aware of the processes for minimising waste and helping keep our streets tidy. You can also report incidents direct by using the My Local Services app; calling us on 8640 3444; emailing council@whyalla.sa.gov.au; or direct messaging us.
