City Update 14 May 2024

Pageant Expression of Interest

A reminder that we're still on the lookout for community groups interested in organising this year's GFG Alliance Christmas Pageant. We've received little interest so far, so are strongly encouraging groups with a passion for their city to consider putting in an expression of interest. We need the community to step up if they'd like to see this event continue. Click the link to read the full release and fill out an expression of interest form: https://bit.ly/49I8Hpo

History Festival kicks off in Whyalla

The Whyalla Maritime Museum is celebrating its rich heritage with a new exhibition featuring previously unseen original artwork. Presented as part of the South Australian History Festival, the exhibition showcases drawings, paintings, and artefacts from South Pacific Islands and First Nations. These works have been acquired over the past 36 years and provide insight into the region's history and culture.

In addition to the exhibition, Maritime Museum Curator Paul Mazourek will be conducting a talk titled "After the Shipyards: Whyalla in the 1980s" as part of the History Festival.

After the Shipyards: Whyalla in the 1980's

As part of the South Australian History Festival, Maritime Museum Curator Paul Mazourek will be conducting a talk titled "After the Shipyards: Whyalla in the 1980s". This talk will explore the impact of the BHP Whyalla Shipyards' permanent closure in 1978, which led to an exodus of skilled workers and their families.

As Whyalla was built around heavy industries, the story of the city has been described as being continually in decline ever since. Mr Mazourek will be discussing if this notion is correct.

The talk will take place at the Whyalla Public Library on Thursday, May 16, from 11am to 12pm, and is FREE to attend.

Watch the video below to hear from Paul Mazourek. If you'd like to learn more about the History Festival and attend some great events, click the link: https://bit.ly/3Qs9tQR

Abandoned Trolleys

Abandoned trolleys littering our streets are not only unsightly, but also causing a hazard to pedestrians, particularly when walking at night. We appeal to residents that remove trolleys from the supermarkets to return them to a designated collection point (in the supermarket itself or the car park), rather than leaving them offsite.

Council has been working closely with the supermarkets to address this issue, but we can all help make a difference - if you see a trolley left abandoned anywhere in the city, you can report it via the below channels.

Woolworths: https://trolleytracker.com.au or 1800 641 497

Coles: https://www.coles.com.au/help/abandoned-trolley or 1800 876 553

The best way to stamp it out is for all of us to play our part in helping reduce the problem.
