City Update 13 September 2024

Early Childhood Educators Day

The day recognises and celebrates the work of Australia’s educators in early learning services for the important role they play in supporting children’s wellbeing, learning and development in the early years.

It’s a chance to say thank you to our early childhood educators on a very personal level by service operators, families and their children, as well as collectively at the state and national levels.

The children and staff at the Child Care Centre dressed up as superheroes to recognise that Early Childhood Educators across Australia are superheroes themselves.

RUOK? Day 2024

Yesterday was R U OK? Day – A Day dedicated to reminding us all to check in with one another and ask, “R U OK?” It’s a small question with the potential to start important conversations and provide the support we all need at times.

Council showed support for the day by wearing yellow, handing out KitKats with conversation prompts and positive messages and lighting up the HMAS Whyalla yellow last night and tonight (see photo below)!

Let’s continue to support each other, and Ask R U OK? Any Day because life happens every day. For more information and resources, please click the link: https://bit.ly/3TprjoO

Investing in Cuttlefish Coast

The Federal Government is investing $400,000 to help manage and protect our region’s unique Cuttlefish Coast Sanctuary Zone, helping ensure it can better cater for continually growing visitor numbers. The funding will help to develop a conservation management and tourism plan for the site, which sees thousands of Giant Australian Cuttlefish congregate along the four kilometres of shallow rocky reef each year.

Led by the South Australian Government, in partnership with Whyalla City Council, this project will ensure the site is prepared for increased visitation and minimise impacts on the surrounding region. This is becoming increasingly important as numbers grow year-on-year, including a 25% increase from last year, with 2024 numbers edging close to 15,000 visitors. A visit from Fireman Phill

The Library had a truckload of families visit, all excited to meet Fireman Phil from the Adelaide MFS.

Fireman Phil joined in all the songs, as well as teaching about home fire safety, before sharing a story using the big screen. Before heading off Phil put on his firefighting uniform, it is heavy and thick to help keep him safe, he then showed everyone what to do in a fire "we need to get down low and go go go!".

Phil would like us to remember that 'Home Fire Safety' starts with YOU and only working smoke alarms save lives!
